Philosophy of Music Education
I believe that music is an experience that should be provided for all children. No matter what the child’s background is, all children should have the opportunity to receive a quality music education. Music education provides a chance for children to build strong relationships, develop important life skills, and learn music skills that will help them in other subjects.
I believe that the music classroom should be a safe space for all students in the school. Students should feel safe to be who they are and not fear judgment from anyone. Since music is about teamwork, the music classroom should be judgment-free to prevent the development of teamwork skills. I believe that students learn best when they feel safe in the classroom. Thus, it is important to me that all students feel safe in my classroom.
I believe that while a life-long career in music is not for everyone, people of all ages deserve a quality education in music. Music has so many positive attributes to life skills, core classes, and personal relationships. Music education should be as important of a class in school as core subjects, like math, English, history, and science.
While I think it is important to provide strong music education for all, it is also important to provide different musical opportunities. Students gain a lot of confidence through performance opportunities. Additionally, experiences like performing and seeing professional ensembles perform motivate students to work harder in music.
