Background Information

The baroque period is considered to be from 1600-1750, with the late baroque era to be during 1680-1750. The term "baroque" was coined by nineteenth century musicians. It was a time period of rich and diverse music. 

Characteristics:

- Contrast: compositions used differences between loud and soft, solo and ensemble in concertos, and the timbres of different instruments as a dramatic effect. 

- Composers focused on melody and harmony rather than complicated polyphony.

- Different instrumental sounds were used: no clear tuning pitch, unspecified performance techniques, and new timbres.
