Viol da Gamba

The viol da gamba was commonly used for chamber music in the 16th to the 18th century. The bass viol was prominent during the baroque era as it provided harmonic support through basso continuo.

The viol da gamba is a bowed, stringed instrument that is held between the legs, similarly to the modern cello. It has between 5-7 strings, and is fretted to provide the clarity of open strings when using fingerings.
